Spoilers if you haven't
read the story.
Main characters
G.R.A.E.
The first person narrator and main character. The tale
begins shortly after his escape from a laboratory where he
has been kept, experimented upon and used. Alive and able to
stand sunlight, but extraordinarily strong and fast and
forced to drink blood to survive, he has human as well as
vampiric traits. After his escape, he has sworn not to kill
again, and wants just want to live a quiet life - which
proves very hard for a man in his situation. The story
centers around what happens to him and his personal
development, and he tells quite honestly of his feelings and
his trouble with expressing them.
Vincent
Marsellus
The first glimpse of Vincent we get, is when he has taken a
very sick G.R.A.E. in and offers him some of his blood to
save his life. Vincent is everything you would expect from a
stereotypical vampire - wealthy, dressed oldfashionedly and
taking himself just a bit too seriously. However, he also
enjoys watching vampire films because they're funny, easily
takes to new hobbies such as painting and photographing, and
does a great deal to keep up his image. He cares very much
for G.R.A.E. and Evelyn.
Evelyn
Marsellus
The adopted daughter of Vincent. She is the one who finds
G.R.A.E. and tells Vincent about him. Evelyn was orphaned
when she was very young, after her parents died, and Vincent
adopted her. She easily accepts G.R.A.E. as part of the
household and grows to love him. How much she knows about
Vincent's nature is unclear, but she does seem to know a
lot.
Lawrence
A researcher in the lab from where G.R.A.E. escaped.
G.R.A.E. may have killed him in the act of fleeing, but
Lawrence returns time and again in his dreams - in memories
as well as nightmares. He is also likely to show up as a
voice in the back of G.R.A.E.'s mind when G.R.A.E. is under
great pressure and his life is at stake.
Regulars, semi-regulars and
people important to the plot
Lyon ("the ancient
vampire")
A very old and extremely powerful vampire who shows quite an
interest in G.R.A.E. from their first encounter at Vincent's
dinner party. He comes and goes as pleases him, but he seems
to be in regular contact with Vincent. He has bitten
G.R.A.E. just to taste him, and surprisingly (according to
Vincent) not killed him for biting him in return.
Daniel
The first person narrator of daniels_diary. A vampire who looks like a teenage
boy but who is in fact several hundred years old. He is a
member of Teufelstein's clan but may have his own agenda. He
holds a grudge against G.R.A.E. and has threatened to kill
him.
Ghost
The first person narrator of ghostsjournal. Sent from the lab to capture
G.R.A.E., he starts out loyal to the agent who is watching
him. When this agent is killed, he is on his own and he
starts to change very much. His abilities seem similar to
G.R.A.E.'s although he is in many ways different.
Mist
The first person narrator of mistsnotes. Like Ghost, she appears to have
been sent to capture G.R.A.E., but her means are quite
different. She killed the agent watching her and the one
watching Ghost and has undergone many changes since she was
set free on the world.
Joss
The first person narrator of artful_device. A young painter whom G.R.A.E.
befriends when he is given the task of reviewing an art
exhibition. Finding a familiarty between them, G.R.A.E.
attempts to help Joss come to terms with his troubled past,
and he enjoys discussing art with him.
"My
friend"
G.R.A.E. occasionally addresses a specific person in his
story, and this seems to be the person who warned him
against Ghost in a dream. He is someone whom G.R.A.E.
considers a good friend, presumeably a reader of the
blog.
Markus
A vampire who twice abducted Ghost, the second time nearly
succeeding in killing him. He ended up taking his own life
when G.R.A.E. had finally found him and decided to fight him
to rescue Ghost.
Susan
An editor of a small magazine about art and culture who
employs G.R.A.E. after reading bits of his diary. She is
very easy-going and talkative.
Maeve
"Protegé" of a mysterious man called Silk, this young
boy is left alone by his master. His body and face are full
of scars, and G.R.A.E. attempts to help him, but realises it
is futile. Maeve re-appears in Ghost's narrative and becomes
his companion.
The blue-eyed
stranger
G.R.A.E. first meets this person on a train ride. Since then
he has been in the narrative a number of times, more or less
corporeally. He appears to know a great deal about G.R.A.E.
and what is going on, but no solid facts have been revealed
about him. However, G.R.A.E. is now quite sure that he has
nothing to fear from him.
Theodor, the Count of
Teufelstein
A powerful vampire who is the head of a clan of vampires. He
tried to make G.R.A.E. join them, but when his offer was
turned down, he made it clear that if G.R.A.E. did anything
to disturb his matters, they would be enemies.
Martha
The friendly, middleaged maid who cooks and cleans in the
Marsellus residence.
Shelly
A fortune teller whom G.R.A.E. met when he was searching for
the abducted (by Markus) Ghost. She proved invaluable in
finding Ghost.
The old lady &
Laban
An old lady who lives near Vincent. G.R.A.E. visits her
occasionally and walks her dog, Laban.
Others
A number of people appear in
G.R.A.E.'s story such as Evelyn's classmates or people whom
G.R.A.E. encounter once in his life and comment upon They
have no lasting importance, so I won't talk about them
here.
Crossovers
If you think you recognise a
character from one of my other works (e.g. Tales
Untold), you might
just be right. There is a connection between most of my
stories, but is it not very significant. G.R.A.E.'s story is
not at all dependent on any other story.
